Why Doesn’t “We Might as Well Start” Simply Mean “We Could Also Start”?

“We might as well start.”为什么不是“也可以开始”?

“We might as well start.”常不是“我们也可以开始”,而是“既然没有更好的理由等下去,不如现在开始”。might as well 表示此时没有充分理由不这样做,常带一点“那就这样吧”的语气。

例如:A: Should we wait for Tom? B: He said he’d be late, so we might as well start. 这里不是猜测“可能开始”,而是在已有信息下作决定。

它略显无奈,不适合表达热切期待;真心盼望参加,可说“I’d love to.”澳洲、英国和美国都自然使用,语气由上下文决定。
