What Is Ultimate Meaning? Does Life Need a Highest Purpose?

Ultimate meaning is the meaning that provides final orientation and explanation for life, the world, or the order of value. It is not a local goal, but the question of why anything is ultimately worth pursuing.

Ultimate meaning matters because local success does not automatically answer why life is worth living. A person may have work, income, and entertainment, yet still feel empty. Religious traditions often locate ultimate meaning in God, salvation, or transcendent order. Secular thought may locate it in human progress, creation, love, or freedom. Philosophy asks whether ultimate meaning is discovered or created. The modern problem is that we have many goals but little meaning. Ultimate meaning may not require one universal answer, but it requires a person to face seriously what they finally live for.
