What Is Faith? Must Faith Conflict with Reason?

Faith is trust and commitment toward an ultimate object, value, or promise. It is not only belief in a fact, but also a direction of life.

Faith matters because human beings do not live by evidence alone. Many fundamental commitments, such as life being worth continuing, the good being worth pursuing, or others being worth trusting, contain an element of faith. Philosophy asks whether faith can be supported by reason or must go beyond reason. Religious traditions connect faith with revelation, the sacred, and salvation. Secular life also contains faith in progress, humanity, or freedom. The modern problem is not that faith disappears, but that it becomes scattered and hidden. Faith reminds us that human beings choose their ultimate reliance under incomplete certainty.
