What Is the Sacred? Why Are Some Things Not to Be Treated Casually?

The sacred refers to objects, spaces, moments, or values regarded as beyond ordinary utility and worthy of awe, reverence, or protection.

The sacred matters because human culture is not made only of usefulness. Religious rituals, ancestral memory, graves, vows, national symbols, and human dignity may all carry sacred significance. Philosophy and religious studies ask whether the sacred comes from transcendent reality or from meanings collectively given by human beings. Modern society is secularized in many ways, yet it also creates new sacred objects: nation, market, technology, or individual freedom. The sacred reveals what a society treats as non-negotiable and not to be violated. It exposes the true center of value.
