A piano piece does not complete itself after it has been played “enough times”.
Between placing a new score on the desk and performing it reliably on another day, another instrument and in front of a listener lie different forms of work: decoding notation, finding structure, choosing fingering, building movement and bimanual coordination, developing pulse, diagnosing difficulty, organising sound and pedal, constructing memory, and turning local repair into uninterrupted performance.
No single method solves all of these tasks. Slow practice increases observation time but may change movement when it becomes too slow. Sectioning reduces load but can create seams. Hands-separate work clarifies each part but does not automatically build bimanual coordination. A metronome supplies external temporal reference but cannot replace internal pulse. Repetition stabilises a solution and can equally make an undiagnosed error more familiar.
Building a Piano Piece is therefore not a universal prescription. It is a framework for choosing a practice method according to a problem.
How the series uses evidence
Piano pedagogy contains rich traditions and experienced practice, but tightly controlled research on the learning of complete repertoire remains limited. Studies often use short keypress sequences, simple patterns, small groups of piano students or a few expert performers. Long expert case studies reveal the course of practice but cannot become a standard schedule for everyone.
The series follows three principles.
First, it states what the research actually measured. A finger-sequence experiment can illuminate motor learning without proving how a sonata must be practised. A concert pianist’s memory case can reveal structural cues without guaranteeing that every learner memorises in the same way.
Second, it distinguishes findings from pedagogical synthesis. The fifteen-minute first-reading protocol, three tempo zones, sectioning ladder and completion tests in these articles combine several kinds of evidence. They are practical frameworks, not formulas validated as complete interventions.
Third, observable criteria replace magic numbers. The series does not prescribe one daily duration, one repetition count or one percentage for slow practice. It asks whether the problem has been identified, whether a correction is reproducible, whether it returns after a delay, and whether it survives restoration to a longer context.
The twelve-article learning path
Part One: How to begin
Sight-reading, quick study and long-term repertoire learning are different tasks. The article builds a study–imagine–trial–diagnose process in which the first playing obtains movement and auditory information unavailable from the page alone.
Slow practice is defined by function rather than percentage. Analysis, coordination and performance-proximity tempi provide different information, and near-tempo bursts test whether a slow solution remains viable.
A unit should isolate one problem while preserving preparation, event and departure. Overlap, seam practice and progressive enlargement return local change to the music.
Part Two: Building movement and time
Fingering organises movement rather than labelling isolated notes. Critical choices need early stability and testing for context, tempo, musical function, repeatability and physical cost.
Separation clarifies material, fingering and sound; combination learns synchrony, alternation, balance and shared time. The goal is an adjustable relationship, not two isolated fluencies.
Dense clicks become sparse, intermittent and removable. The device is treated as a measuring and calibration tool that helps distinguish expressive timing from uncontrolled drift.
Part Three: Making practice change performance
Consecutive correctness measures immediate performance, not necessarily retention. Repetition becomes practice through a target, comparison and correction, followed by tests after time, from another entry and in longer context.
The final wrong note is traced to the first deviation. “Cannot play” becomes a testable hypothesis about reading, rhythm, fingering, location, coordination, attention or physical load.
“More feeling” is translated into voice hierarchy, dynamic relation, phrase trajectory, timing and articulation. Recording answers explicit listening questions rather than supplying vague self-approval.
Score and harmony propose a pedal solution; instrument and room alter it; listening remains responsible. Pedal controls decay, resonance and clarity rather than concealing connection and balance problems.
Part Four: Creating reliable performance
Auditory, visual-spatial, structural and expressive cues supplement the motor chain. Multiple landmarks and interruption recovery turn memorisation into a network of retrieval routes.
Completion is judged through text, movement, auditory interpretation, memory and location, continuous performance and contextual adaptation. Zero wrong notes may be an outcome, but it cannot define reliability alone.
Three ways to read
When beginning a new work, follow the articles in order. The first six establish early practice; Articles Seven to Ten address stability and sound; the final two prepare memory and performance.
When one difficult place remains unchanged, begin with Articles Seven and Eight, then return to sectioning, fingering, bimanual or metronome work according to the diagnosis.
When the piece already runs but sounds flat, memory feels fragile or recording causes collapse, begin at Article Nine and continue through sound, pedal, memory and completion.
A practice loop to keep beside the score
What do I intend to hear or accomplish?
→ Where does the first deviation from that intention occur?
→ Which method corresponds to that cause?
→ What changed after one attempt?
→ Can the result return after a delay, from another entry, or in longer context?
→ If not, shrink, simplify or change the task
→ If so, enlarge it and return it to the music
The loop adds one essential operation to “play it again”: each repetition must produce information that can be compared.
Limits of the series
The material is intended for general piano learners and experienced players examining their practice structure. It cannot replace individual guidance from a qualified teacher on hand use, movement, edition, style and repertoire level, and it does not provide medical diagnosis. Pain, tingling or persistent discomfort requires stopping the relevant activity and seeking appropriate teaching or healthcare advice.
The repertoire examples illustrate methods; they are not complete performing editions or bar-by-bar interpretations. Fingering, tempo, pedal and sound must be re-evaluated for the edition, body, instrument, room and learning purpose.
The central judgement
The basic unit of piano practice is not time or repetition count. It is a corrective cycle capable of producing feedback. Completion does not turn every detail into an infallible machine. It builds enough relationships for the music to be understood, reconstructed and continued through small deviations.
A piece is not finished simply because it has been “put into the hands”. It is finished when score, hearing, movement, memory, instrument and time form a structure that can be started again.
