Building a Piano Piece · Article Twelve
A piece has been played from beginning to end three times at home without an obvious stop. Is it learned? What if the first attempt tomorrow is unstable? What if a different piano, a listener nearby or the red light of a recording causes familiar places to shift?
“Learned” is not one state. A score may be decoded without stable fingering; technique may work without voicing and direction; a fluent run in familiar conditions may coexist with an inability to start in the middle; private practice may be successful before uninterrupted performance has been trained.
Completion should therefore ask not only whether the piece can be played now, but whether it remains recoverable across time, context and small deviations:
A piece is truly learned not when it has once appeared without error, but when the player can explain it, reconstruct it, perform it continuously, and preserve its musical identity through modest changes and slips.
This does not impose professional concert standards on every learner. Difficulty, purpose and setting alter the threshold. At every level, however, one lucky performance is weak evidence of reliability.
Six capacities contained in “learned”
Textual capacity
Pitch, rhythm, metre, repeats, articulation and fundamental markings are correctly understood. Accidental slips can occur, but no undiscovered systematic misreading remains.
Motor capacity
Critical fingering, positions, bimanual coordination and pedal can be repeated at a viable tempo without persistent pain, tingling or forced tension. Technical solutions work in context, not only in isolated difficult bars.
Auditory and interpretive capacity
The player can state and hear melody, bass, layers, phrase direction, timing choices and colour. Dynamics and pedalling have structural explanations rather than being late additions.
Memory and location capacity
Whether or not the score is present, the player knows the form, can enter at several points, differentiates similar passages and has a route after a lapse. Reading from the score does not remove this need; page turns, distraction and misreading also require recovery.
Continuous-performance capacity
The intended length can be completed without stopping to repair every small error. Local correction in practice and temporal commitment in performance are different tasks.
Contextual adaptation
On another instrument, in another room, while recording, under observation or with moderate arousal, the basic structure and musical intentions persist. Adaptation does not mean identical results everywhere; it means recalibration remains possible.
The six capacities need not reach the same maximum. Playing a short piece for a friend, taking an examination and preparing a public recital require different reliability. The danger is allowing one strength to conceal another absence—using automatic memory instead of structure, or pitch accuracy instead of continuous performance.
Practice performance and performance performance are different tasks
Practice permits stopping, checking, repeating and changing strategy. Performance continues through time and accepts the consequences of sound already made. The ability to repair every problem during practice does not show that non-repairing continuation has been practised.
Research on concert soloists’ preparation describes hierarchical mental maps and performance cues through which automatic actions can be monitored and adjusted. The work synthesised by Chaffin and Lisboa is grounded largely in expert cases and long observation, not a completion scale for ordinary learners. It supports a central idea: stable performance does not eliminate conscious control; it concentrates control at selected landmarks.
Late in learning, separate repair practice from performance tests. Repair may stop. A test has a predetermined length and condition and, unless physical discomfort or complete breakdown requires cessation, continues to its endpoint. Diagnosis occurs afterwards.
Three levels of reliability testing
This system is an editorial synthesis, not a universally validated examination.
Level 1: cold starts
Without warming up on the piece, play from the opening; then begin at a randomly chosen structural landmark. Cold starts test retrieval rather than the residual momentum of recent repetition.
Level 2: one-take recording
Record the whole work or planned movement once. Do not restart for a minor error. On playback, classify issues as textual, technical, temporal, sonic, mnemonic or recovery-related. Avoid “generally bad”.
Level 3: contextual simulation
Safely change one condition: invite one trusted listener, use another piano or room, play at the scheduled time, introduce the piece before starting, or perform the programme order. Change one factor at a time so its effect can be observed.
All levels need not occur daily. Excessive run-throughs and constant testing consume repair time and add fatigue. Tests expose gaps not represented in ordinary practice conditions.
Error count is not the sole completion measure
Zero wrong notes sounds objective and can be misleading. An error-free performance may lack pulse, layering and direction. A performance with a small slip may preserve structure and recover immediately. The type and consequence of error matter.
Distinguish a recoverable accidental slip, a recurring textual misreading, a technical failure that breaks pulse, a balance problem that destroys voice identity, and a memory lapse that forces a restart. They cannot be combined meaningfully as one total.
A systematic review of solo-performance assessment found criteria across textual accuracy, rhythm, technique, dynamics, phrasing, tone, expression and communication. The review covers diverse settings and offers no universal weighting. It confirms that serious assessment is already multidimensional rather than a wrong-note count.
Why does a listener change the result?
Performance situations introduce evaluative threat, physiological arousal, altered attention and greater perceived consequence of error. Music performance anxiety occurs beyond professional stages and is not synonymous with poor preparation. A systematic review of professional musicians reported widely varying prevalence estimates and uneven intervention quality. Anxiety should not be reduced to “perform more often”, and medical advice should not be improvised.
For a general learner, gradual simulation remains a reasonable preparation principle: recording, then one trusted listener, then a larger or more formal setting. The aim is not to remove every bodily response but to return attention to musical landmarks and the next action. Severe, persistent anxiety affecting health or life warrants help from an appropriately qualified mental-health professional rather than compulsively increased practice.
A seven-day pre-completion framework
This is an example of distributed checks, not a fixed schedule:
- Day one: cold one-take recording; identify the three largest problems.
- Day two: repair only; no complete run-through.
- Day three: random landmarks and interruption recovery.
- Day four: sound and pedal work, recorded from another listening distance.
- Day five: one full simulation beginning at the planned time.
- Day six: light correction and mental rehearsal; avoid fatigue accumulation.
- Day seven: one performance in target conditions, followed by maintenance notes.
Adapt to length, bodily condition and performance date. Multiple complete runs every day are not the only route to reliability and may create attentional and physical fatigue.
Example: different meanings of “knowing” Beethoven’s “Für Elise”
The opening theme of Beethoven’s “Für Elise”, WoO 59 often stands in for the entire work in informal learning. The score is available through IMSLP. Knowing the familiar opening is not knowing the whole structure; reaching the end once does not establish stable contrasting sections and returns.
A text test confirms the complete version, repeats and all sections. A motor test addresses fingering, tempo and transitions in contrasting material and returns. A sound test asks whether each return of the theme reflects its structural location rather than copying a mechanical template. A memory test begins directly in the contrasting material and at the return. A continuity test survives a slip without returning to the famous opening. A context test performs the entire piece for recording or a listener.
A learner who wants only the opening may set that valid goal, but should call it learning the theme rather than treating unlearned middle material as part of a completed work. Scope and claim should match.
Can a learned piece deteriorate?
Yes. Completion is not permanent storage. Motor, memory and interpretive decisions change with time; instruments and bodies vary. A well-learned work is often easier to reactivate through structure and landmarks, but still needs maintenance.
Maintenance need not be a daily complete run. Rotate a cold start, landmarks, one difficult transition and an occasional complete performance. If the piece leaves the active repertoire, notes on fingering, structure, pedal hypotheses and critical problems reduce future relearning cost.
The conclusion of the series
From first study through slow practice, sectioning, fingering, bimanual work, metronome use, repetition, difficult passages, sound, pedal and memory, every method in this series solves a particular class of problem. No method alone turns a score into a performance.
A truly learned work has three properties: its construction can be understood, its performance can be rebuilt, and its music can continue through deviation. Zero error is a worthwhile possible result, but it is neither the only nor deepest definition of completion.
A piece is learned not when the player has finally controlled every note, but when a sufficient system of relationships has been built for the music to form again across different times and conditions.
