Do Hanon, Czerny, and Technical Exercises Automatically Transfer into Repertoire?

Hanon, Czerny and other technical exercises are often placed in one drawer labelled “fundamentals”, as though they were finger gymnastics at different levels. They impose different tasks.

A Hanon-like pattern repeats a finger combination in a relatively stable location and rule. A Czerny study usually places velocity, accompaniment, broken chords, scales, repeated notes or bimanual relations inside a short work with syntax and harmonic direction. A concert étude may transform a technical constraint into the expressive identity of a complete piece. Calling all three “technique” conceals the decisive question: Which capacity should transfer from this material to which task in repertoire?

No book performs that transfer automatically. Exercises can reduce complexity, create repetition and magnify a problem. The learner must still identify shared relationships and reorganise them under new musical conditions.

Completing a book is not a technical outcome

Exercise books provide page numbers and therefore a powerful feeling of progress. Number 20 comes after number 10, but “completed number 20” describes location in a book, not what changed in sound, movement or transfer.

Technical aims can be separated into at least five types:

  1. Movement organisation: relocation, rotation, leaps, repetition and release.
  2. Temporal organisation: evenness, grouping, displaced accent, bimanual synchrony or alternation.
  3. Sound control: dynamic levels, legato, non-legato, melody and accompaniment.
  4. Reading and pattern recognition: rapid recognition of key, chord, sequence and texture.
  5. Adaptability: reorganisation of the preceding capacities under different keys, tempi, starting points, dynamics and contexts.

An exercise may involve several types without improving all of them. A fixed pattern can become faster while reading and adaptability are barely engaged because pitch, starting point and goal never change.

Why research cannot issue Hanon or Czerny a pass–fail certificate

High-quality long-term studies comparing Hanon, Czerny and repertoire outcomes are scarce. Experiments often borrow Hanon-like sequences because they are controllable, not because they have validated an entire pedagogy.

An experiment on spacing during piano learning used a seventeen-note, left-hand sequence modelled on Hanon. Participants learnt it under several short-lag conditions, and the expected simple spacing advantage was not found. The finding belongs to one short experimental task. It neither proves nor disproves Hanon as a curriculum and cannot determine which exercise an adult should play daily.

In another study, training gains for a fast piano sequence were most direct on the trained material and differed on a similar sequence, a more distant finger task and transfer to the other hand. The benefits showed substantial specificity. This is not an argument against exercise. It is an argument against the vague inference that making “the fingers stronger” will automatically improve every piece.

Research on bimanual skill has also found that transfer between unimanual and bimanual sequence learning can be restricted. The four-day experiment did not use complete piano repertoire, but it makes a relevant point: learning each hand independently does not constitute training of shared time and interdependence. The more an exercise removes, the more deliberately those relationships must later be restored.

When Hanon-like patterns may be useful

Regular repeated patterns can act as a microscope. Because pitch order and rhythm are predictable, attention can be directed to one variable: whether a finger produces an accent, whether the wrist follows a changing position, whether speed causes gripping, or whether the hands show a recurrent temporal displacement.

A microscope needs a question. Write, for example: “Use this pattern to examine timing and release during right-hand 4–5 alternation.” Record a short baseline, choose one intervention—move accents, change grouping, transpose, compare one hand and two, or sample speed in short bursts—and finally return to the original version and a related repertoire passage.

“Play exercise six ten times” offers no such control. Repetition can stabilise both useful and unhelpful movement. Nor does a traditional label make forceful finger lifting, immobilising other fingers or practising through discomfort safe. Individual movement needs individual observation. Pain or numbness requires stopping the provoking activity.

When a Czerny study may be useful

Czerny studies are closer to repertoire because they contain harmony, phrase, accompaniment, modulation and sectional form. A study centred on an Alberti-bass pattern can combine left-hand organisation, harmonic arrival, right-hand melody and phrase-length endurance.

Its risk is correspondingly musical: the learner may pursue the printed tempo while failing to hear voice, accent, harmonic direction and recovery. The very variables that could transfer remain unattended.

Before beginning a study, define a “graduation task”: where will its capacity be tested? A learner might aim to build light, even left-hand broken chords, then test whether the accompaniment in a Mozart sonata remains quiet, stable and adjustable beneath the melody. If Czerny becomes faster over two weeks while the target passage does not change, the method or the material should be reconsidered.

A six-question exercise audit

Every technical exercise can be examined through six questions.

1. What is the target? Describe it in sound and movement rather than writing “technique”.

2. What does the material magnify? Repeated notes, relocation, synchronisation, accompaniment evenness or voicing?

3. What does it remove? Complex rhythm, phrase, pedal, another hand or the real span? Removed relationships must later be restored.

4. How is success audible? Speed is not the only measure. An accent may disappear, releases may align, melody may retain foreground status, or bass arrivals may become reliable.

5. What is the next transfer test? Name a passage, another key or rhythm, a new entry or a cold attempt after delay.

6. What is the physical cost? Does maintenance require escalating force? Is there pain, numbness or increasing rigidity? Discomfort is not evidence of effectiveness.

An exercise becomes a learning tool when the first five questions can be answered and the sixth is allowed to limit it.

A twenty-minute exercise–variation–repertoire design

Suppose the goal is to remove an accent created by relocation in a right-hand scale passage.

Spend two minutes recording a baseline in the actual piece. Confirm that relocation, rather than the left hand, an unsuitable fingering or phrase acceleration, is the likely cause.

Use six minutes on a structurally related regular pattern. Hear the accent slowly, then move rhythmic groups so different notes occupy the perceptual beat. Do not simply accelerate each repetition.

Use four minutes to change key, starting point or direction. This tests whether the organisation is tied to one keyboard location.

Return to the piece for six minutes, preserving the preceding beat, actual fingering, dynamic and destination. Enlarge from short groups into the phrase.

Finally, leave the passage and cold-start it once during the final two minutes. Write tomorrow’s test. Greater fluency in the exercise is not success if repertoire is unchanged.

The same design works for Czerny, except that the technical material already contains musical syntax. Sound must remain central during the study rather than being added after “the technique” has been completed.

Three reasons to pause or discard an exercise

First, its target has been achieved and the material continues only from habit. Maintenance may require lower frequency; an exercise book need not become a lifelong tax.

Second, the exercise repeatedly improves itself while failing transfer tests. Restore more real context or choose material sharing more relationships with the target piece.

Third, the activity provokes pain, persistent discomfort or loss of control. No page number justifies symptoms. Load, movement and professional support need adjustment.

Hanon, Czerny and technical exercises do not deposit a general technical currency that automatically flows into every work. They provide constrained environments in which a relationship can become visible, repeatable and variable. The learner must complete the final step: bring that control back into music where metre, harmony, sound, body and phrase operate together.

The value of an exercise book is not the page reached. It is whether a real problem in the next piece becomes easier to understand and solve.
