“How long should I practise every day?” is a reasonable question. Learners need to organise work and family life, and teachers need to set expectations that can actually be followed. Yet once “thirty minutes a day” or “two hours a day” becomes the principal standard, a substitution often occurs: a number on the clock takes the place of the sound, movement and understanding that practice was meant to improve.
Thirty minutes might contain a clear diagnosis, several compared attempts and a delayed test. It might equally contain repeated play-throughs from the beginning. The two sessions occupy the same time but do not create the same learning. A timer can certify that practice has been completed without identifying a single thing that changed.
Time still matters. Skill requires sustained contact, while bodies and attention have limited capacity. The problem is more precise: time is useful for containing and scheduling practice, but it is a poor stand-alone measure of whether learning occurred.
What research can tell us—and what it cannot prescribe
A meta-analysis of 13 studies, with a combined sample of 788 participants, found a substantial association between task-relevant accumulated practice and musical achievement. The authors reported an aggregate corrected correlation of 0.61. This supports an unsurprising but important conclusion: advanced musical skill is rarely developed without extensive, relevant practice.
It does not tell an adult learner whether Wednesday evening should contain twenty-five or forty-five minutes. The studies differed in how practice was defined and recalled, who was studied and how performance was measured. Accumulated practice is also entangled with teaching, starting age, opportunity, goals, motivation, physical capacity and prior skill. Converting a long-term group relationship into an individual daily prescription requires an inference that the meta-analysis did not test.
“Deliberate practice” is also routinely reduced to the proposition that enough hours will manufacture expertise. Researchers defending the original framework have stressed that deliberate practice, in its strict sense, is designed to improve a current performance level, addresses a specific weakness and includes informative feedback. Not every hour alone at an instrument qualifies. Their account of the definition and its limits also notes that the several-hour routines of conservatoire students occur in a full-time training environment. They cannot simply be copied into the life of every piano learner.
Research following conservatoire musicians preparing for examinations similarly places temporal organisation beside planning, attainable challenge, preparation and self-regulation. That work does not reveal a winning daily duration. The practical lesson is not that quantity is irrelevant and quality is everything. Available time must be sufficient, but it must carry activities capable of changing performance.
Replace minutes with four kinds of result
A practice session can be described through four more informative units.
The first is a contact unit. Did today’s work renew familiarity with material that would otherwise fade? This matters in early reading, sight-reading and repertoire maintenance.
The second is a correction unit. Was one problem identified, an appropriate strategy tried, and a change heard or observed? “Practise page two for ten minutes” describes occupancy. “Confirm the two landing places in bars 28–31 and reach them slowly without watching the hand” describes a testable result.
The third is a retention unit. Did the improvement return after two minutes, after another task, or on the next day? A fifth correct repetition in an uninterrupted run measures a warm immediate state more than it measures durable access.
The fourth is an integration unit. Did the local improvement survive restoration to the phrase, the larger section or a tempo closer to performance? Producing four correct notes in isolation is not the same as preparing them from the previous beat and departing into the next bar.
Minutes remain necessary because a day needs boundaries. They become containers rather than proof. A session can end when one or two intended result units have been completed, attention and physical state have been checked, and an unfinished question has been converted into a useful starting point for next time.
Deciding today’s duration
Four questions produce a more responsible duration than a universal number.
What tasks are required today? First reading needs broad scanning. Repairing a leap needs short, high-quality location attempts. A complete performance needs an uninterrupted span. Memory testing needs delay. Different tasks naturally create different blocks.
How much usable attention is available? Forty-five fatigued minutes are not automatically worth more than twenty alert ones. When fine monitoring deteriorates, a learner may change from precision movement to score study, fingering decisions or structured listening. These are legitimate forms of work, but they should not be disguised as the same task.
What is the body reporting? Repetition, abrupt increases in playing load, stress and inefficient use are among the factors discussed in research on musicians’ musculoskeletal problems. A recent overview of systematic reviews found that such problems are common while evidence for preventive interventions remains heterogeneous and limited. It does not justify a guaranteed safe duration or warm-up formula. Pain, numbness, weakness or persistent discomfort changes the question: stop the provoking activity and obtain appropriate professional assessment instead of calculating the remaining minutes.
Can the work be revisited tomorrow or soon afterwards? If a learner has only two longer windows in a week, longer sessions may be unavoidable. When frequent contact is possible, several clear encounters create more opportunities to test retention. Consistency should not become a moral badge. Its practical value is the number of feedback cycles it permits, not the preservation of a streak.
A result-centred practice sheet
The following is a flexible template, not an experimentally validated timetable.

With only twenty minutes, a learner might perform the retention test, one correction and the exit note. With more time, two or three cycles can be separated by leaving the bench. The table is not a checklist that must be completed after monitoring has failed.
Suppose twenty minutes are available for a Beethoven sonata. The objective need not be “practise Beethoven for twenty minutes”. It might be: cold-test yesterday’s four bars; compare two fingerings for five minutes; leave the passage and work on another task; return from the preceding bar; record what tomorrow should test. That session has produced diagnosis, correction and retrieval.
Conversely, result units do not eliminate full runs. A continuous performance reveals endurance, attentional route, large-scale proportion and recovery after small deviations. It is itself a task that cannot be subdivided without changing what is being tested. Its value still lies in the information collected afterwards, not in the fact that the stopwatch ran for the length of the piece.
A stopping rule more useful than “ten more minutes”
After each block, ask three questions:
- Can I state what the next attempt is intended to change?
- Can I still hear or observe the difference between attempts?
- Is movement controllable, without pain, numbness or escalating force used merely to finish?
If all three answers are yes, continuation may be useful. If the first or second becomes no, rest or change to a task with different demands. If the third raises concern, stop the provoking movement. Persistent symptoms call for a suitable teacher and health professional, not more willpower.
This rule also prevents a subtler error: assuming that an effective session can be extended indefinitely. High-quality work consumes attention. Ending while a problem remains clear and leaving a recoverable next step may serve long-term learning better than turning the final twenty minutes into undifferentiated repetition.
Keep recording time—but record it beside results
Duration is useful for noticing sudden load increases, long gaps and plans that repeatedly exceed real life. It becomes more informative when each entry also records the task, an initial attempt, the strategy used, the ending result, physical load and the next test.
After four weeks, do not merely total the hours. Ask which tasks were completed, which problems returned, when attention was best, whether pieces could be recovered with less warm-up, and whether the body reported increasing load. Time then becomes data for revising a system rather than a score of personal virtue.
There is consequently no responsible daily duration detached from goal, level, life and physical state. Begin with a sustainable window, divide it into tasks that generate feedback, and revise it over weeks according to retention, integration and load.
The definition of completion matters more than the exact number:
Today’s practice is not complete when the timer sounds. It is complete when a problem is clearer, a response has been tested, and the next point of entry has been preserved.
