How Small Should a Practice Section Be Before the Music Falls Apart?

When a piece will not run from beginning to end, the standard advice is to practise in sections. Four pages become four-bar units; a difficult place is reduced to one bar or half a bar. The local material eventually becomes accurate, but a new failure appears when the sections are joined. Each beginning can be started and each ending has acquired the character of a full stop. At the junction, the player hesitates and restarts the pulse.

This does not show that sectional practice is ineffective. It shows that a section has two identities. It is a temporary practice unit chosen to reduce a problem, and it remains part of a larger musical relation. Practise only the first identity and local accuracy may improve while the piece becomes a set of disconnected fragments.

There is no universal number of bars for an ideal section. A better rule is:

Make the section small enough to contain one clearly defined problem, but large enough to preserve the preparation for that problem, the event itself, and the way out of it.

Do not practise only the difficult notes. Practise how the music arrives there and where it goes next.

Why sections are usually more useful than repeated run-throughs

Sectioning reduces the number of competing demands. If reading, fingering, rhythm, coordination, sound and structural direction all fail within a long passage, it is difficult to determine why. A shorter unit can direct attention to one relocation, one rhythmic relation or one phrase.

Observational evidence shows that more advanced instrumentalists tend to identify difficulties, concentrate on local material, and then reintegrate it into a larger structure. Less advanced players more often repeat from beginning to end. Hallam’s study of 55 young string players was not a causal trial of piano sectioning, but it reveals the strategic distinction: expert-like practice moves between part and whole. It does not simply make the part smaller and remain there.

Another study visualised where piano students began and stopped during practice. More skilled players used repeated short segments at difficult places, worked on transitions into and out of them, and made longer trials to test whether local work had become smooth. The Music Practice Browser study had a limited sample and was partly a study of the visualisation system itself. It cannot identify an optimal section length. It does make visible that section boundaries are a consequential part of practice behaviour.

Do not divide the page evenly

Four-bar units look tidy but may have little to do with musical or physical organisation. A phrase can cross a bar line. Preparation for a leap occurs on the preceding beat. A harmonic resolution belongs to the following bar. The principal difficulty may be the transition between two printed systems.

Consider three structures when choosing boundaries:

  • Musical structure: motives, phrases, harmonic motion, question and answer, repetition and change.
  • Movement structure: positions, substitutions, leaps, crossings, releases and preparations.
  • Attentional structure: the one feature that the trial is meant to hear or control.

A useful boundary need not always respect the phrase, but the player should know why the phrase has been temporarily cut. If a half-bar unit is isolated to repair a relocation, the full musical sentence must later be restored.

Let the problem define the smallest unit

The minimum useful section must produce an interpretable result. One wrong note is often too small because its cause lies in the preceding action. Starting at the beginning of the piece is too large because most of the preceding music does not need another repetition.

Use a three-part unit:

  1. Begin where the difficult event can be prepared—often a beat or movement group earlier.
  2. Perform the target action or relationship.
  3. Continue to the next stable point rather than stopping the instant the danger has passed.

If a leap misses, repeating only the landing chord does not train the release, travel or timing of departure. If a thumb crossing is uneven, the hand may have failed to begin its lateral movement before the thumb was needed. The section must include the cause.

If the section still fails, reduce task complexity, not only bar count. Block a figuration into chords, extract outer voices, separate the hands, remove the pedal, speak the rhythm or rehearse the spatial path without sounding every note. Size and complexity are two different controls.

Every section needs seam practice

The main side effect of sectioning is a learned stop at the endpoint. The remedy is overlap.

If section A is bars 1–4 and section B is bars 5–8, do not practise only A and B. Add bars 3–6, or at least begin before the final gesture of A and continue beyond the first stable event in B. The task at the seam is not to relearn both sections. It is to turn the ending of one into preparation for the next.

Research on bridging chunks in complex movement sequences is beginning to distinguish control within a chunk from control across a boundary. A recent piano-like sequence study compared perturbations within and between trained chunks. Its controlled task is far simpler than repertoire, but it supports a useful distinction: possessing two chunks is not identical to possessing the bridge between them.

Treat the junction as a third practice object:

section A
section B
the A-to-B seam

Only when all three work has a larger unit been formed.

A five-level ladder from fragment to music

This ladder is an adaptable test, not a compulsory sequence.

Level 1: the action or rhythm unit

This may be one beat, one pattern or one relocation. The goal must be singular—for example, “the left hand reaches the bass without arriving late”. After each attempt, state what happened.

Level 2: the short section with context

Add the preparation and departure. If the improvement disappears, the solution exists only in isolation.

Level 3: the complete phrase or subsection

Restore direction, voicing, dynamics and breathing. Once the technical point has improved, avoid retaining an examination-like, note-by-note delivery.

Level 4: adjoining phrases and their seam

Begin inside the previous phrase, cross the junction, and continue inside the next. Vary starting points so that memory does not depend on one habitual beginning.

Level 5: a long section or whole-piece test

Make one uninterrupted run, without repairing on the way. Afterwards, record which target or transition deteriorated under longer-range demands, then return to the appropriate level. A run-through is a test here, not the principal repair tool.

Move up and down the ladder. Shrink when the cause remains unclear; expand when the local result is stable; diagnose again when expansion causes failure.

Is backward practice necessary?

“Practise from the end backwards” is often suggested to prevent the opening becoming much more familiar than the ending. It can be a useful scheduling method: learn the final section, then the preceding section, then join them. It does not mean playing every note in reverse, and evidence does not establish it as a universal superior method.

Its principal benefit is allocation. A player who always starts at bar one spends fresh attention on the opening and reaches the end only when tired. Beginning elsewhere corrects that bias. If the main difficulty is at the opening, or later material depends strongly on understanding the initial theme, mechanical reverse order makes little sense.

The broader rule is to choose the starting point according to learning need rather than allowing page order to dictate practice order.

Example: Bach’s Invention in C major, BWV 772

In Bach’s Invention in C major, BWV 772, material is imitated, extended and transferred between two voices. The score is available through IMSLP. Dividing every two bars or every printed line may place the boundary in the middle of a motive’s entry or answer.

First mark the principal motive and its important entries. Then choose practice units according to the actual problem. If a right-hand entry is unclear, begin with enough of the preceding left-hand material for the ear to know what is being answered. If the pulse fails when the voices exchange roles, include the ending of one entry and the beginning of the next.

When a voice is practised separately, continue to sing or imagine the entry of the absent voice. On recombining, listen to the handover rather than asking only whether both hands produced correct notes. The section then serves a contrapuntal relationship instead of merely reducing the number of notes.

Signs that a section is too large or too small

A section may be too large when one attempt contains several indistinguishable causes of failure; repetitions stop in different places; the player’s only goal is to survive to the endpoint; or the attentional target disappears midway.

It may be too small when every repetition trains a stop; entry from outside fails; the fingering cannot connect to its neighbours; pulse, harmony or phrase direction disappears; or successful units cannot be joined.

A well-sized section allows the player to say what is being solved, why one attempt improved, and what must be tested when the unit expands.

Sectional practice does not aim to keep the music divided. It creates a temporary field in which a problem can be observed and changed. Its final success is that the section ceases to be heard as a section.

Divide in order to see the problem; overlap, connect and enlarge so that the solution belongs to the music again.
