Nothingness can mean non-being or emptiness, but it can also mean the collapse of value and meaning. When a person feels that all pursuits lack foundation, they encounter existential nothingness.
Nothingness matters because it is a deep modern experience. As traditional religion and community weaken, many people no longer receive meaning from established orders. Philosophy asks whether nothingness is a crisis to be overcome or the starting point for free creation of meaning. Nietzsche understood nihilism as a consequence of the collapse of modern values, while existentialism tried to accept freedom in a world without given meaning. AI and technological society may intensify this feeling: when efficiency replaces purpose, people may no longer know why they live. Nothingness forces us to ask whether we can still choose and take responsibility without ready-made answers.
