What Is Symbol? Why Can an Image Carry Deeper Meaning?

A symbol is an object, image, or action that points beyond itself toward deeper meaning, value, or relation. Flags, crosses, wedding rings, and flames can all function as symbols.

Symbols matter because human cultures use them to gather memory and value. A symbol can condense complex history, identity, and feeling into a visible form. Philosophy asks whether symbolic meaning is fixed or changes through culture and interpretation. Modern society constantly produces symbols: brand logos, avatars, memes, and political images all shape collective emotion. Symbols can connect people, but they can also manipulate them. To understand symbols is to understand why people may feel strongly about a piece of cloth, a statue, or an icon.
