What Is Expression? How Does Art Communicate What Cannot Be Said Directly?

Expression is the presentation of inner feeling, thought, or experience through language, gesture, sound, image, or form. It is not simply copying the inner life, but creating a sensible form.

Expression matters because many human experiences cannot be directly translated into explanatory language. Grief can be expressed through music, loneliness through image and rhythm. Philosophy asks whether art expresses the artist's inner state, the structure of the work, or meanings formed by the audience. Modern society encourages self-expression, but also turns expression into traffic and performance. AI-generated content raises a further question: if there is no inner experience, can the product still be expression? Expression reminds us that to express is not only to say something, but to find a form capable of carrying experience.
