What Is a Sign? How Can a Sign Stand for Something Absent?

A sign is something that represents, indicates, or evokes an object, meaning, or relation. Words, images, gestures, traffic signs, and mathematical formulas can all function as signs.

Signs matter because human culture depends on symbolic capacity. We can speak about absent things, record the past, plan the future, and communicate abstract ideas. Philosophy and semiotics ask whether the relation between sign and object is natural, conventional, or determined by use. Modern society is saturated with signs: brands, avatars, memes, charts, and interface icons all shape behavior. AI also operates largely through signs and patterns. The concept reminds us that human beings do not live in bare reality directly; we live in a world organized by signs.
