What Is Language? Is It Only a Tool for Expressing Thought?

Language is a system of signs, sounds, writing, and rules through which human beings express, communicate, and organize meaning. It does not merely transmit thought; it also helps shape thought.

Language matters because human beings understand the world largely through language. We classify things with words, express judgments with sentences, and organize life through narratives. Philosophy asks whether language reflects reality or helps construct it. After Wittgenstein, many philosophers paid more attention to language use in concrete situations: the meaning of a word is not only in the dictionary, but also in forms of life. AI makes the question sharper. Machines can generate fluent language, but do they understand meaning? Language may not be the clothing of thought; it may be the space in which thought becomes possible.
