What Is Context? Why Can the Same Sentence Mean Different Things?

Context is the background in which language, action, or events occur. It includes speaker, listener, time, place, relation, culture, and purpose.

Context matters because meaning is rarely determined by words alone. The same sentence, "You are impressive," may be sincere praise or sarcasm. Philosophy asks how much meaning comes from fixed semantics and how much from concrete use. In modern communication, quoting out of context, screenshot circulation, and algorithmic recommendation often detach statements from their background, causing reinterpretation and misunderstanding. AI also faces the problem of context: without lived background and practical purpose, language can become formal pattern matching. Context reminds us that understanding requires more than reading the literal words.
