What Is Judgment? How Do We Decide Whether a Claim Holds?

Judgment is the capacity to combine concepts, evidence, and standards in order to affirm, deny, or evaluate an object, claim, or action.

Judgment matters because knowledge and action both depend on it. You must judge whether information is true, whether someone is trustworthy, whether a choice is worthwhile, and whether a risk can be taken. Judgment differs from mechanical calculation because it often occurs under incomplete information, conflicting values, and complex situations. Philosophy asks whether judgment depends on rules, experience, intuition, or practical wisdom. In modern society, AI can assist judgment, but it cannot take over all responsibility for it. Judgment is a fitting closing concept for this series: learning philosophical concepts is not about memorizing terms, but about forming clearer and more responsible judgment.
