What Is Subject? Who Experiences, Judges, and Acts?

The subject is a being capable of experience, consciousness, judgment, and action. It is not merely an object, but a center to whom the world appears and from whom responses emerge.

The subject matters because many modern philosophical problems revolve around it. How do I know the world? How do I act freely? How do I live with others? Descartes placed the subject at the center of certainty. Kant treated the subject as a condition of experience. Later thinkers criticized the idea that the subject is fully autonomous, emphasizing language, body, power, and social structure. In the age of AI, the question returns: can a machine become a subject, or is it always an object and tool? The concept reminds us that action and responsibility require a center capable of responding to the world.
