“Träumerei” (German for “Dreaming” or “Reverie”) is a short piano piece composed in 1838 by the German composer Robert Schumann. It is the seventh piece in his piano suite Kinderszenen (Scenes from Childhood, Op. 15). As one of Schumann’s most famous and frequently performed works, it is cherished for its gentle, poetic, and dreamlike melody.
Schumann wrote the Kinderszenen suite to express the beautiful and idealized memories adults have of their childhood. “Träumerei” is the most representative piece of the collection, marked by its slow tempo and simple yet profoundly moving melody, imbued with introspection and tender emotion.
This piece is not very difficult to play technically—it roughly corresponds to Grade 7 or 8 in the Chinese amateur piano examination system, or Grade 6 in the Australian AMEB system. However, playing it well is quite challenging, especially in maintaining the continuity of emotional expression, which is hard to master.
