To accurately describe this misunderstanding, we first need to clarify what Christians mean by love.
In Christian values, love is a form of care that comes from God, is unconditional, carries a spirit of sacrifice, and is expressed through concrete actions. It encompasses warmth, responsibility, and forgiveness. Since Christians believe that love originates from God, in their view, those who do not believe in God naturally have no source of love. Obviously, non-Christians do not agree with this. The moral foundation of non-Christians mainly comes from secular systems of rules, and sometimes from certain mysterious sources that Christians may regard as superstition. Secular systems can, to some extent, also measure whether a person has love.
Christian love is unconditional—this is something I deeply appreciate. My Christian friends are indeed very loving, and I can clearly feel their tolerance toward me. I genuinely admire this about them. However, I do not believe that non-Christian love is always conditional; they too can display selfless love. For example, the love of parents for their children is often unconditional, and they may not necessarily believe in God.
Nevertheless, from a non-Christian perspective, the Christian call to love one’s enemies is indeed an extremely high moral standard. This is truly the power of faith, and it is hard to explain from a utilitarian standpoint.
