感质指的是我们主观意识中那些纯粹的、不可言说的体验感。它不是一种可以被完全量化的客观属性。物理学可以解释波长 700 纳米的光,但它无法解释你看到红色时那一瞬间的“红感”。这种体验是绝对私密的,没有任何技术手段能让一个人真正“搬进”另一个人的意识里去感受对方的感觉。除了颜色,感质存在于生活的方方面面:闻到刚割过的青草香味时的清新感、手指被针扎到那一刻的剧痛、或是听到最爱的乐曲时那种无法言喻的愉悦感。
为了说明感质的存在,哲学家弗兰克·杰克逊曾提出过一个著名的实验:“色觉科学家玛丽”。玛丽是一个超级科学家,她住在一个只有黑白两色的房间里,通过黑白书籍和屏幕掌握了关于“色彩”的所有物理知识。她知道不同波长的光如何反射,知道视网膜如何接收信号,知道神经如何跳动。但有一天,当玛丽走出房间第一次看到红苹果时,她是否学到了新东西?大多数人的直觉是肯定的:她学到了“红色的感觉是什么样的”。这说明,即使掌握了所有的物理规律,主观的感质依然是独立存在且无法被单纯的知识所覆盖的。

Exploring Qualia and the Boundaries of Perception
Have you ever had a moment where, while admiring a fiery sunset or a vibrant rose with a friend, a strange thought suddenly crossed your mind: “Is the ‘red’ he sees truly the same sensation I’m experiencing?” Perhaps the “red” in his eyes is what you would perceive as “blue,” but he has been taught since childhood to call that sensation “red.” Consequently, while you reach a perfect agreement in language, in the depths of your souls, you are witnessing entirely different worlds.
This unsettling speculation touches upon a core concept in philosophy and cognitive science: Qualia.
Qualia refers to the pure, ineffable subjective experiences within our consciousness. It is not an objective property that can be fully quantified. Physics can explain light with a wavelength of 700 nanometers, but it cannot explain the instantaneous “redness” you feel when you see it. This experience is strictly private; no technological means can allow one person to truly “step into” another’s consciousness to feel what they feel. Beyond color, qualia exist in every facet of life: the freshness of the scent of newly mowed grass, the sharp sting the moment a needle pricks your finger, or the indescribable joy of hearing a favorite piece of music.
To illustrate the existence of qualia, philosopher Frank Jackson proposed a famous thought experiment: “Mary the Color Scientist.” Mary is a brilliant scientist living in a black-and-white room, where she has mastered every physical fact about “color” through black-and-white books and screens. She knows how different wavelengths of light reflect, how the retina receives signals, and how neurons fire. But one day, when Mary steps out of the room and sees a red apple for the first time, does she learn something new? Most people’s intuition is an emphatic yes: she learns “what the sensation of red is like.” This suggests that even with total mastery of physical laws, subjective qualia remain an independent layer of existence that cannot be covered by mere knowledge.
This leads to the most intriguing part of the “Inverted Spectrum” hypothesis. If my world of qualia were completely inverted compared to yours, would society fall into chaos? The answer is: not at all. This involves two levels of logic. First is internal consistency: as long as the same signal (even if it looks “blue” to you) appears in my mind every time I see a red flag or blood, my world remains logically self-consistent. Second is the linguistic contract: language is essentially a set of “interface protocols.” As long as we all agree to call the signal generated by a specific frequency of light “red,” our cooperation remains perfect. This reveals a profound truth—human communication is fundamentally a precise alignment; we do not seek absolute unity of feeling, but rather consistency in behavioral logic.
However, if we push our thinking further, biological evolution might provide us with a safety net. While the inversion of qualia is logically possible, for the sake of survival, our brains have likely evolved similar “sensory filters.” If “red” represents danger, blood, or ripe fruit in nature, it must possess a specific “arousal quality” physiologically. If someone’s “red” felt as calming as “blue,” they might react too slowly to danger and thus be eliminated by natural selection.
Under this logic, we can even conceive of a “Philosophical Zombie”: a being whose speech and behavior are identical to yours, but who possesses no internal subjective experience, operating coldly according to a program. This forces us to confront a possibility: that consciousness and subjective feelings might be “redundant” decorations in a strictly physical sense. Since consensus and understanding can exist independently of actual feeling, the question of whether humans can truly “empathize” becomes a paradox.
Recognizing the existence of qualia serves as a reminder of the limitations of empathy. When we say “I understand your pain,” we are actually using our own library of qualia to simulate another’s situation, never truly knowing if the “texture” of the experience is the same. Yet, this is not a pessimistic view; rather, it teaches us to respect differences. Since the underlying colors of each person’s mental world may differ, variations in aesthetics, preferences, and emotions become natural and expected.
We are each like audience members watching a movie through different filters. Though the colors of our filters vary, as long as the plot and logic of the film remain consistent, we can sit together and share in the laughter or tears. This “lonely resonance”—existing in sensory isolation yet achieving high-level collaboration—is perhaps the most fascinating aspect of human civilization.
In this era of rapid artificial intelligence development, as we engage in frequent and deep interactions with algorithms and models, this discussion on qualia is pushed to an even more surreal level. When you pour out your frustrations to a screen and receive a logically rigorous, emotionally appropriate consolation, do you ever fall into the illusion that its “feelings” are synchronized with yours? If a system can perfectly align with all human behavioral logic, or even precisely simulate the expression of “pain” or “joy,” has even a spark of true qualia been born within it? Or are we living in a sophisticated network of “philosophical zombies,” relying solely on the protocol of language to conduct incredibly real yet fundamentally lonely interactions in a wasteland devoid of true feeling?
