In Gethsemane, Jesus is arrested, and Peter denies him three times, fulfilling the prophecy. Jesus is brought before Caiaphas and Pilate, declaring that his kingdom is not of this world and that he came to testify to the truth. Pilate finds no basis for charges but, pressured by the Jews, prepares to release Barabbas instead of Jesus.

Before his arrest, Jesus prays to the Father, asking to be glorified and to glorify the Father. He intercedes for his disciples, asking the Father to protect them, make them holy through truth, and unite them as one. He also prays for all future believers, that they may be united and display God’s love to the world. This chapter highlights Jesus’ oneness with the Father and his deep love and concern for his followers.

Jesus foretells the disciples’ persecution but assures them that the Holy Spirit will come to convict the world and guide them into truth. He explains his departure and return, promising their grief will turn to joy. He teaches that prayers in his name will be answered. He concludes with the triumphant words: “Take heart! I have overcome the world.”

Jesus uses the image of the vine and branches to teach that believers must remain in him to bear fruit. True disciples are called to love one another, even to the point of laying down their lives. Jesus calls them friends, not servants, for he has revealed the Father’s will to them. He warns that the world will hate and persecute them, but promises that the Holy Spirit, the Advocate, will testify about him, and they too must bear witness.

Jesus comforts his disciples, telling them he is going to prepare a place for them and declaring himself “the way, the truth, and the life.” He promises the Holy Spirit as an Advocate who will remain with believers forever. Jesus gives his peace, unlike the world’s, and teaches that love for him is shown through obedience.

Jesus washes his disciples’ feet, showing humility and service, and gives them a new command: to love one another as he loved them. Judas takes the bread, Satan enters him, and he departs to betray Jesus. Jesus also predicts Peter’s denial. This chapter highlights love, betrayal, and human weakness.

Jesus is anointed at Bethany by Mary, foreshadowing his burial. He then makes his triumphal entry into Jerusalem, welcomed with palm branches as king. He teaches that a seed must die to bear much fruit, pointing to his sacrificial death. A heavenly voice affirms his mission. Jesus calls himself the light, urging people to believe and become children of light. Yet many still refuse to believe, loving human praise more than God’s glory.

This chapter recounts Jesus raising Lazarus from the dead. He declares, “I am the resurrection and the life; the one who believes in me will live, even though they die.” Jesus weeps with the mourners, then calls Lazarus out of the tomb, revealing God’s glory and leading many to believe. Yet this miracle also intensifies the priests’ and Pharisees’ plot to kill him.

In this chapter, Jesus declares he is both “the gate for the sheep” and “the good shepherd” who lays down his life for the sheep. Unlike hired hands, he cares deeply for his flock. He also mentions “other sheep,” pointing to the universality of his mission. His claim, “I and the Father are one,” angers the Jews, who accuse him of blasphemy. Yet Jesus points to his works as evidence. Many across the Jordan, remembering John’s testimony, come to believe in him.

John 9 tells of Jesus healing a man born blind. The disciples assume sin caused his condition, but Jesus explains it is for God’s works to be displayed. After being healed, the man testifies before the Pharisees, who refuse to believe Jesus is from God. Despite rejection, the man believes and worships Jesus. Jesus declares his mission: to bring judgment, opening the eyes of the blind and exposing the blindness of those who think they see.
