I agree with Sartre’s existentialism, especially with its core idea that “existence precedes essence.” This captures the reality of human freedom and responsibility, reminding us that we are not passive beings shaped by the world but active creators of meaning. The emphasis on freedom and choice is deeply valuable and inspiring for modern life.

But I do not agree with Sartre’s existentialist philosophy, especially as presented in Being and Nothingness. In trying to turn existentialism into a systematic philosophy, Sartre actually weakened its original power. For example, he avoided the term “consciousness” and instead used technical terms like “being-for-itself,” which only made the discussion more complicated and confusing. His treatment of time also felt superficial—closer to a psychological description than a profound philosophical analysis.

Existentialism should be a stance, an attitude toward life, not a self-enclosed philosophical system. Sartre’s drive to build a grand system drained existentialism of its clarity and force. That is why my position is: I affirm Sartre’s existentialist spirit, but I do not accept Sartre’s existentialist philosophy.

Sartre’s existentialism does not answer a series of fundamental philosophical questions; it is merely a unique, even somewhat obsessive, doctrine.
