Why Do Wet Clothes Dry Faster in the Wind?

Wet clothes do not need their water to boil before they can dry. Whenever some faster-moving water molecules at the surface have enough energy to escape into the air, evaporation occurs.

When clothes are first hung out, the surrounding air is comparatively dry and water vapour can disperse readily. After a while, a humid layer develops next to the fibres, reducing the net rate at which vapour leaves the fabric. Wind does not mainly work by “heating” the clothes. It carries this moist layer away and replaces it with drier air, allowing evaporation to continue more quickly.

That is why stronger wind is not equally effective in every setting. If the surrounding air is already very humid, the replacement air is close to saturation and drying remains slow. Higher temperatures generally help because molecular motion is greater. Spreading clothes out rather than leaving them bundled also exposes more fibre surface from which water molecules can escape.

Evaporation absorbs energy, so wet fabric may become slightly cooler than the surrounding air. The central point is that wind speeds drying by continually renewing the air conditions at the fabric surface, not by supplying heat as a tumble dryer does.
