The sublime is the experience of awe before what is vast, powerful, infinite, or beyond control. It differs from simple beauty and is closer to astonishment or reverence.
The sublime matters because human beings are not only attracted by harmony; we are also shaken by what exceeds our scale. Mountains, starry skies, storms, oceans, and images of the cosmos can all evoke the sublime. Philosophy asks whether the sublime comes from the object itself or from the mind's awareness of the limits of imagination and reason. Modern technology creates new forms of the sublime: giant machines, data centers, AI models, and space exploration produce a sense of power and smallness at once. The sublime reminds us that human beings need to face what is larger than themselves in order to understand their place.
