What Is Beauty? Is Beauty Only Personal Preference?

Beauty is the attraction, harmony, radiance, or appreciable quality experienced in objects, forms, relations, or events. It has both sensory and value dimensions.

Beauty matters because human beings do not seek only usefulness. We seek things worth seeing, hearing, and dwelling with. A piece of music, a building, a face, or a mathematical proof may all be called beautiful. Philosophy asks whether beauty is an objective quality or a subjective feeling. Kant argued that aesthetic judgment is based on feeling, yet carries a claim to broader agreement. In modern society, beauty is often standardized by commerce and algorithms, becoming a consumable image. The question of beauty asks not only "Do I like it?" but "How does it open the world?"
