What Is Perception? Do We See the World as It Really Is?

Perception is the process through which we encounter the world by sight, hearing, touch, smell, taste, and other sensory capacities. It is a major source of experience and knowledge.

Perception matters because our first trust in reality often comes from saying, "I saw it" or "I heard it." Yet perception is not passive reception. Illusions, hallucinations, and selective attention show that the mind actively organizes sensory material. Philosophy asks whether we perceive external objects themselves or representations shaped by the mind. Cognitive science and AI vision systems also show that recognizing the world requires models and interpretation. Perception gives us access to reality, but it also reminds us that seeing is not the same as fully understanding.
