What Is Intentionality? Why Is Consciousness Always About Something?

Intentionality is the feature by which mental states are directed toward objects, contents, or meanings. Believing, hoping, fearing, remembering, and imagining are usually about something.

Intentionality matters because it shows that consciousness is not a closed inner state. It is related to the world. You fear a danger, expect an outcome, or think about a problem. Philosophy asks how this aboutness is possible: how can a mental state refer to an external object, or even to something that does not exist? AI makes the issue sharper. A language model can talk about the world, but does it genuinely refer to the world, or only process relations among symbols? Intentionality helps distinguish meaningful mental activity from merely mechanical response.
