What Is Mind? Is the Mind the Same as the Brain?

Mind refers to thought, feeling, consciousness, desire, memory, imagination, and other mental activities. It is one of the central concepts through which human beings understand themselves.

Mind matters because it concerns whether a person is only a physical body or also has a subjective life that cannot be fully reduced to physical description. In everyday life, we distinguish bodily fatigue from mental suffering and say that someone has changed their mind. Philosophy asks how mind and brain are related. Is the mind identical with neural activity, or does it have properties that physical description cannot capture? Neuroscience reveals more about the brain, yet consciousness, meaning, and self-experience remain difficult to translate completely into brain images. The question of mind is also central to AI: if a machine processes information, can it have a mind?
