A paradox occurs when apparently reasonable premises and reasoning lead to contradiction, absurdity, or an unacceptable conclusion. It reveals deep problems in concepts, language, or rules.
Paradoxes matter because they are not merely intellectual games. They push philosophy and science to reflect. The sentence "This sentence is false" creates a loop of truth and falsity. Zeno's paradoxes challenge our understanding of motion and infinity. Philosophy asks whether paradoxes show that our concepts are flawed, or that reality is more complex than ordinary understanding allows. Modern life also contains practical paradoxes: the more we try to save time, the more efficiency tools occupy us; the more connected we become, the lonelier we may feel. Paradox forces us to inspect assumptions we thought were clear.
