What Is Liberalism? Why Did Individual Freedom Become Central to Modern Politics?

Liberalism is a political tradition centered on individual freedom, rights, rule of law, and limits on power. It emphasizes that individuals should not be arbitrarily dominated by the state, religion, or collective.

Liberalism matters because modern democracy, constitutionalism, human rights, and market institutions are deeply shaped by it. Philosophy asks whether liberalism overemphasizes the individual and neglects community, tradition, and economic inequality. Modern society creates new challenges: platform power, data surveillance, algorithmic manipulation, and polarized media do not always come from the state, but they can still restrict freedom. The central question of liberalism must therefore be renewed. It is not enough to limit government power; we must also understand how private technological power shapes individual choice.
