The individual is a person with relatively independent identity, rights, experience, and agency. Modern politics and ethics often treat the individual as a basic unit.
The individual matters because freedom, rights, responsibility, and dignity all depend on the concept. In everyday life, we assume that each person has their own choices and life, and should not be completely absorbed by family, state, or collective. Philosophy asks whether the individual exists prior to society, or is always formed through language, institutions, and relations. Modern society celebrates individual freedom, while data, markets, and platforms constantly shape individual preferences. The individual is not an isolated atom, but a person who maintains judgment, dignity, and agency within relations.
