Community is a group of people connected by shared life, values, history, language, or interests. It is not merely a collection of individuals, but a network of belonging and mutual responsibility.
Community matters because human beings are not isolated individuals. Families, cities, religious groups, nations, and professional communities all shape identity. Philosophy debates whether the individual or the community has priority. Liberalism emphasizes individual rights, while communitarianism reminds us that persons are formed within traditions and relationships. In modern society, traditional communities weaken and online communities rise, but belonging can become fragile and polarized. The question of community asks what kind of common life can protect individual freedom while offering real recognition.
