Ideology is a system of ideas that organizes how people understand society, power, and their own place within the world. It is not only explicit theory; it may also appear as everyday common sense.
Ideology matters because people often treat historically formed institutions and values as natural facts. The belief that success depends entirely on personal effort may hide family background, institutional opportunity, and social structure. Philosophy and social theory ask whether ideology is false consciousness or a meaning framework every society needs. In modern society, ideology spreads through media, education, advertising, platforms, and algorithms. It does not always force belief; it makes certain ideas appear obvious. To criticize ideology is to turn what seems natural back into a question.
