
Transfer is the use of previously learned knowledge or skill in a different context. It is not simply repeating familiar steps. It requires recognising and applying a stable relationship after the surface conditions have changed.
A student may calculate a twenty-per-cent discount on a worksheet yet fail to compare the unit prices of two packages in a supermarket. The formula may have been remembered without forming a usable relationship among total quantity, proportion and the basis of comparison. Changing only the numbers tests generalisation within a familiar setting; moving from a discount exercise to an actual choice provides a stronger test of transfer.
Transfer is related to analogy but is not identical to it. Analogy helps reveal a relational similarity between situations. Transfer requires an existing capability to operate in the new task and produce a result. It also differs from adaptability: adaptability concerns changing a method as conditions shift, whereas transfer asks whether earlier learning remains effective across contexts.
Mastery therefore cannot be judged only by repeated success on the original exercise. It also depends on whether a learner can explain what remains constant and what has changed when the setting is different. Transfer tests whether knowledge has moved from being remembered to being available for use.
