What Is a Model? Is a Model the Real World or a Simplification?

A model is a simplified representation of an object, process, or relation, used to explain, predict, or operate on complex phenomena. Maps, formulas, diagrams, and AI systems can all be models.

Models matter because reality is too complex to grasp without simplification. But a model is not reality itself. A map helps navigation but leaves out many details. An economic model predicts trends but may ignore complex human behavior. Philosophy asks whether the value of a model lies in its resemblance to reality or in its usefulness. AI makes the question central: large models generate language and predict patterns, but do they understand the world or fit data? Models remind us that every simplification has power and blind spots. To use a model well, we must know what it hides.
