What Is Evil? Why Do People Do What Is Clearly Wrong?

Evil usually refers to serious harm, destruction, cruelty, or the rejection of the good. It may arise from individual choice, but also from institutional structures.

Evil matters because it forces us to confront the darker sides of human nature and society. In everyday life, evil may appear as deception, indifference, humiliation, and harm. In history, it appears as war, massacre, and oppression. Philosophy asks whether evil comes from ignorance, desire, free choice, or ordinary obedience within systems. Modern society especially requires attention to structural evil: many harms are not caused by one evil person alone, but amplified by rules, technologies, and organizations. To discuss evil is not to indulge despair, but to understand how harm occurs and how it might be prevented.
