What Is a Concept? Why Do We Understand the World Through Concepts?

A concept is a basic unit of thought through which we grasp, classify, and think about things. Without concepts, experience would remain scattered and difficult to judge.

Concepts matter because they determine what we can see, say, and compare. Concepts such as power, consciousness, and algorithm make previously vague phenomena discussable. Philosophy asks whether concepts merely reflect reality or also shape reality. Modern society constantly creates new concepts, such as platform, data rights, and generative AI, and these concepts change how we understand the world. A concept is not an empty term; it is a tool of thought. The clearer the tool, the stronger the thinking.
