自为存在的特征在于它能够与自身拉开距离。不同于单纯“在那里”的即自存在,自为存在(即意识)总是与自身发生关系,总是与自身保持一种距离。它从来不是与自己完全相同的,因为它总是在向着可能性超越。

意识不仅有否定现实的能力,而且是必然要这样做的。人是被判定为自由的。这意味着,一旦被抛入存在之中,他就要为自己的一切行为负责。他无法逃避这种自由,因为即便拒绝选择,本身也是一种选择。

虚无并不是从外部进入世界的东西,也不是一种自存的实体。相反,它存在于人的现实的核心之中。意识把虚无带入世界,因为它具有否定的能力,能够说“不是”,能够区分“不是”的与“是”的。
