(Part One: The Problem of Nothingness – Chapter 2: Freedom and Nothingness)
(Bilingual Text)
English:
Consciousness is not only capable of negating reality; it is also condemned to do so. Man is condemned to be free. This means that once thrown into existence, he is responsible for everything he does. He cannot escape this freedom, for even refusing to choose is itself a choice.
English:
Freedom does not mean doing whatever one wants without limit. It means that nothing compels man to act in a predetermined way. Every action reveals not only what he is, but also what he chooses to be.
English:
Anxiety arises from this condition: in realizing that nothing outside determines his acts, man confronts the vertigo of possibility. This anxiety is the price of freedom.
(Summary)
(Freedom is inescapable: human beings cannot abandon it, since the negating nature of consciousness always implies choice. Responsibility is inevitable, even in refusing to choose. Freedom brings anxiety because of the overwhelming openness of possibilities.)
问答 (Q&A)
Answer (English): Because humans cannot escape choice. Even not choosing is still a form of choice.
Answer (English): Because freedom implies infinite possibilities, with no external rules to decide for us. This “groundlessness” creates fear and vertigo.
Answer (English): Freedom and responsibility are inseparable. Since humans are free, they must take full responsibility for their actions, without shifting it to external forces.
(Legal freedom)
(Social freedom)
(Existential freedom)
English: Sartre is not primarily concerned with whether external conditions grant freedom, but with the ontological level: man cannot not be free. Even under the most oppressive circumstances, one is still responsible for one’s attitude and choices.
4. 问答 (Q&A)
Answer (English): Sartre’s freedom is essentially an affirmation of free will at the philosophical level. He argues that freedom is not a capacity but the very mode of human existence.
Answer (English): They are still important. Legal and social freedoms affect the range of choices one can realize, but do not eliminate existential freedom. These are freedoms on different levels.
(Bilingual Summary)
English: Sartre traced nothingness back to consciousness, making it the starting point of his philosophy. But is consciousness itself reliable? Sartre held that consciousness is a “non-substantial, nihilation force,” not an illusion, but a continuous movement of negation.
5. 问答 (Q&A)
Answer (English): For Sartre, consciousness is not sheer nothingness but a “mode of nihilation.” It has no fixed essence, but its activity of negation is real.
Answer (English): That is a possible critique. But the phenomenological response is: we cannot doubt consciousness, because doubting itself is an act of consciousness.
Answer (English): Because consciousness is not a “thing,” it doesn’t need to be reliable like an entity. Its reliability lies in the fact that it always “nihilates,” always transcends.
