
A representation is a structure that works in place of another object within a particular relationship. A musical score is not sound, yet a performer can use it to produce music. A recording also represents the music, but it preserves an actual acoustic event rather than a set of notes for performing it again.
Representation is not copying. A map that retained every tree and brick would be poor for navigation; it must select differences relevant to its purpose. Nor is every representation a model. Models usually organise an object for explanation, prediction or experiment, while representation is broader: a name, icon or memory may serve only to identify and retrieve.
Whether a representation works depends not only on resemblance but also on the conversion rules its users know. The same marks can indicate different actions in different notation systems. The concept matters because it prompts us to ask what a form preserves, what it leaves out, and who can act through it. Understanding is not merely possessing symbols; it is being able to make them work within the right relationship.
