
Redundancy can look like “extra stuff”, but in a system it is often not waste at all. It is deliberately preserved backup capacity that allows the whole system to keep functioning when one part fails. Two servers providing the same critical function, with one taking over if the other goes down, are a simple example.
The difference between redundancy and inefficiency lies in purpose and mechanism. Meaningless duplication merely adds cost. Useful redundancy specifies what is duplicated, when failover should occur and how failure is detected. NIST systems-engineering guidance treats redundancy as a common way to improve resilience and reliability.
The idea matters because many stable systems do not depend on never failing. They depend on tolerating local failure without allowing the entire structure to collapse immediately. What redundancy preserves is not the duplicate itself, but the possibility of continuing to operate.
