Fact: on 19 August, Stripe announced that it had agreed to acquire OpenRouter, a model-routing platform that assigns requests across more than 400 models according to task complexity, price, speed and reliability. The companies did not disclose terms. Reuters cited an anonymous source who put the value slightly above US$8 billion, a figure the companies have not confirmed.
The sources frame the deal as Stripe moving deeper into AI infrastructure. My judgement is that the more important shift is not the valuation but the point of control. When model choice, token metering and payment sit in one system, models become more interchangeable as suppliers, while the platform governing access and settlement can influence traffic, cost visibility and profit allocation. A “neutral routing layer” will therefore need to demonstrate not only efficiency, but also that rankings remain separate from commercial incentives.
