
Latency is not how long an activity lasts. It is the interval between sending an action and receiving a response. In a video call, half a second can make two people repeatedly talk over one another; the same half-second is negligible in postal delivery. Latency matters in relation to how quickly a system needs to close its feedback loop.
It is related to speed but not identical to it. A large file taking ten minutes to download describes total duration. Nothing appearing for two seconds after the click describes latency. Nor is latency simply the subjective feeling of waiting: anxiety may make an interval feel longer, while the system's response gap can still be measured independently.
The concept matters because feedback guides adjustment only while it remains connected to the action that produced it. At the piano, sound that immediately follows a keystroke helps the hand and ear form a relationship. If the response arrives late, the learner struggles to tell which movement produced which result. Excessive latency does more than reduce efficiency; it changes coordination. People begin guessing, repeating actions or relying on rules instead of immediate feedback. A coherent system therefore needs information not only to return, but to return in time.
