Why Can’t Three Against Two Stay as Six Counted Slots?

When first learning three against two, dividing one shared cycle into six slots is useful: the duplet falls on slots 1 and 4, while the triplet falls on 1, 3 and 5. This gives the displaced attacks clear coordinates. If performance always depends on mentally counting every slot, however, a faster tempo soon fills attention with six tiny units. The hands may reach the correct positions while losing the even two-pulse and three-pulse streams within them.

A bimanual tapping study found that most participants did not control the two hands with completely independent timekeepers. Instead, they integrated three against two into a common timing structure. Another experiment with 36 participants compared whole practice, separate-hand practice, and separate-hand movement while hearing the complete two-against-three pattern. Even when only one hand moved, hearing the whole relationship improved the polyrhythmic structure in later performance, though it did not similarly improve absolute timing stability. Separate-hand work can clarify each pulse train, but combining them still requires an auditory picture of the whole.

Begin slowly with the six-slot count, using it only to locate the shared beginning and the three displaced attacks. Then stop reciting the slots. Let one hand maintain two evenly spaced pulses and the other maintain three, with both meeting again only at the beginning of each cycle. If one hand is pulled out of shape by the other, briefly restore its evenness alone and immediately return it to the whole. The aim is not to chase six attacks mentally, but to hear two different rates that remain even inside one shared cycle.
