
The violin, viola and cello are normally tuned in fifths, but the four-string double bass commonly uses E, A, D and G, a fourth between adjacent strings. The apparent break in family symmetry answers a physical problem first. A double bass has a long vibrating string, so the distance between semitones is large. Tuning in fifths would demand wider reaches within a position and more strenuous shifts.
Fourths bring neighbouring strings a whole tone closer. Scales and bass lines can often be managed with a smaller span, while string crossings replace some large position changes. The cost is that the open strings no longer share the fifth-based symmetry of the violin family, so some melodic fingerings must be organised differently. This is not the only solution permitted by acoustics; it is a compromise among range, instrument size, historical practice and playable movement. Five-string basses and solo tunings show that the convention is not absolute.
The interval of tuning does not create a separate timbre that listeners can identify on its own, but it shapes the bodily course of a phrase. Fast bass lines often unfold across strings, and some leaps require conspicuous shifts, partly because of this layout. A piano places semitones at fixed, repeating distances and can make musical intervals look physically uniform. The double bass reminds us that musical structure becomes sound only through a particular body and material instrument.
