Why Do String Players Sometimes Strike with the Wood of the Bow?

A violin normally uses bow hair against the string, sustaining a flexible sound that can be shaped through time. When the score says col legno—Italian for ‘with the wood’—the player turns the bow so its stick meets the string. The common form, col legno battuto, is struck rather than drawn. The string still supplies an approximate pitch, but the brief wooden impact dominates the sustained vibration, making the section sound like an array of small, dry, pitched percussion instruments.

Berlioz uses this colour in the witches’ sabbath of the fifth movement of Symphonie fantastique. It works for more than its strangeness. Instruments that previously carried singing lines suddenly lose their rounded continuity, making the familiar orchestral body sound alien. Differences in contact point, bow material and the players’ necessarily imperfect synchronisation add a brittle fringe. Listen first for the rhythmic skeleton, then for the pitch that remains faintly inside it.

Col legno is not improved by being hit as hard as possible. The stick receives a direct impact, so players generally control the force, and some prefer a less valuable bow. Excess force can risk the bow and turn a light, ghostly texture into ordinary noise. The link with the piano is revealing: both instruments trigger strings by impact, but a piano hammer is precisely guided by its action, while col legno temporarily converts a bowed instrument into a deliberately unstable striking system. Good orchestration does not merely add an effect; it makes the method of producing sound part of the drama.
