Why Do Short Bursts at Tempo Reveal What Slow Practice Hides?

Slow practice helps an adult pianist clarify notes, fingering and unnecessary tension, but it can also permit an illusion. Each movement is completed separately at a low speed, then at tempo the hand has no time to relocate. Faster playing is not simply every slow movement compressed in equal proportion. Several notes have to be planned as a larger unit, and preparation for the next position must begin earlier.

Take four troublesome fast notes together with the note on which they land. First practise slowly, confirming the notes, the direction of sound and a pain-free movement. Then play that short group near the target tempo and stop. If the first three notes work but the landing is always late, the cause may not be the final finger; the earlier movement has failed to carry the hand towards its destination. A burst lets speed expose the organisation of movement. It is not an attempt to overpower an error by forceful repetition. Experimental work on sequential movement associates increasing skill with motor chunking and improved planning before and during execution. Those experiments are not prescriptions for piano playing; they offer limited support for this practical judgement.

A full-speed burst cannot replace the complete phrase. It may improve a local action while temporarily removing pulse, harmonic direction and the approach into the passage. The group must be returned to its surrounding music so that the written accent and physical freedom can be checked again. The point is not to introduce speed as early as possible. Slow work clarifies; a brief encounter with tempo tests. They answer different questions.
