
Adult beginners who are told to “relax” sometimes deliberately let the wrist droop and the fingers go soft, only to make the touch less responsive. Piano movement cannot occur without muscular activity. A finger must accelerate the key, the non-playing fingers must remain organised, and the forearm must carry the hand towards the next group of notes. A more accurate meaning is that necessary force appears when required and subsides once its job is done. Relaxation is the timing of force, not a fixed posture.
Research helps define the boundary. Oikawa and colleagues used surface electromyography to compare wrist positions and dynamic levels. Flexor and extensor activity increased with loudness and was lowest in a neutral wrist position. Another EMG study of piano sequences found that the muscular activity for one keystroke changed according to the preceding and following notes; professional and amateur pianists alike did not simply send identical packets of force one after another. These findings do not prescribe one wrist angle for everyone. They show that playing requires continuous adjustment rather than a locked wrist or a completely slack hand.
When practising a five-finger pattern, attention can turn to what happens after each sound. Does the forearm continue pushing once the note has spoken? Is unnecessary opposition preventing the next finger from lifting? Deliberately relaxing until the fingertip loses support is not the goal either. The joints must still transmit force, while needless residual tension is allowed to leave between actions. If practice causes pain or numbness, stop and seek professional assessment; “relaxation” should never be used to hide an injury.
