
Faced with a large bowl of freely available chocolate, people do not always calculate how much they need and then choose a weight. A unit supplied by the setting—one scoop, packet or piece—can feel like a natural, complete and appropriate amount. This tendency is known as unit bias.
In a 2006 study, Andrew Geier, Paul Rozin and Gheorghe Doros placed free M&M’s at an apartment-building reception desk and alternated between smaller and larger serving spoons. A sign allowed people to take as much as they wished, yet many still took one scoop. The total weight selected per day was substantially greater when the larger spoon was present. Related field studies offered sweets or pretzels as differently sized individual pieces and found effects in the same direction. A unit is not merely a container for food; it can act as an unspoken suggestion that this amount counts as one serving.
The research does not show that unit size determines intake by itself. The experiments recorded total selection by day, some passers-by may have appeared on more than one day, and the researchers measured what was taken rather than confirming that every portion was eaten immediately. The original paper also noted that the increase fell short of what would be expected if unit size fully controlled behaviour. Unit bias is therefore best treated as a heuristic, not a law applying uniformly to every person and food.
It is related to, but narrower than, the general portion-size effect. Portion-size effects describe the tendency to select or consume more when more is served; unit bias offers one possible mechanism, namely that a single unit is mistaken for an appropriate scale. The central point is not that people lack self-control. Judgement does not occur only inside the head: packaging, utensils and segmentation quietly supply a numerical reference.
