While walking down the mountain, I found myself thinking about piano and music. The starting point was simple. I was thinking of several pieces I like: Canon in D, Für Elise, Träumerei, Playing Love, Somewhere Out There, Somewhere in Time, and River Flows in You. These pieces are not all at the same technical level. Some of them are not especially difficult. Yet they share one quality. As soon as the first few notes appear, they can pull a person in. Sometimes the body even feels a kind of electric shock.
That led me to a deeper question. When an ordinary person, or more precisely a genuine music lover, wants to play the piano, where does that original impulse come from? I do not think it begins with the desire to master a technique, show off, perform for others, or prove that one has made progress. Those things may appear later, but they are not the root. The deepest impulse comes from music itself. A person wants to play because certain sounds, melodies, and atmospheres have already formed an attraction inside the mind. Playing does not begin with technique. It begins with being called by music.
Language can also move us emotionally, but it does so indirectly. A sentence must first be understood before it can generate feeling. That process depends on knowledge, memory, and learned patterns. When words enter the mind, we place them inside an existing system of meaning and match them with past experience. Only then does emotion arise. Language certainly has its own musical beauty, especially in poetry. Poetry and song have always been close to each other. But the core of language is still meaning. Language usually touches emotion through meaning.
Music is different. Music can have no explicit semantic meaning at all. It does not first present a concept, ask us to understand it, and then produce emotion through that understanding. Music is sound: frequencies, intensities, rhythms, timbres, and harmonic relations. Yet these sounds can directly alter emotional states. They do not need explanation or translation. They do not need to pass through a conceptual system first. They move from sound directly into feeling.
This is a major difference between music and language. Language often reaches emotion by passing through meaning. Music seems to touch emotion directly. Language produces emotion after being processed through knowledge patterns, at least as a semi-rational response. Music removes that intermediate layer. It is not without structure, but its structure is not primarily semantic. It is sonic, auditory, bodily, and emotional.
Of course, music is not entirely separate from experience and culture. Musical styles differ greatly across nations and traditions. Chinese music, Japanese music, and Western music do not always share the same sense of mode, cadence, suspension, and resolution. In one tradition, a note may sound unresolved, as if it is still hanging in the air. In another tradition, the same kind of ending may already feel complete. This shows that higher-level musical perception depends strongly on cultural patterns.
Culture, in this sense, is a system of rapid pattern recognition. When we listen to a piece, we do not know its key from the first note through a fixed formula. The first note cannot determine the key of a piece. Tonality gradually emerges as the music unfolds. At the beginning, the auditory system forms only a vague hypothesis from a small number of notes. As more notes appear and the sample space grows, the pattern becomes clearer and the sense of key becomes more stable.
So the perception of tonality is not based on an absolute mathematical method. It is a dynamic process of pattern recognition. The brain samples, compares, revises, and eventually forms a stable auditory expectation. We do not logically deduce tonality. We gradually confirm it through listening.
At a deeper and more microscopic level, however, music also contains something closer to cross-cultural commonality. Consider consonance and dissonance. Why do the octave and the perfect fifth sound stable? Why do certain intervals create tension? This is not purely cultural. It is also related to the structure of the human ear, the auditory system, and the ratios between frequencies. The human body appears to have relatively stable responses to certain sound relations.
This means that the emotional effect of music can be understood on two levels. Higher-level elements such as mode, style, cadence, and aesthetic habit are strongly cultural. Lower-level elements such as interval relations, frequency ratios, tension, and release have a clearer physiological basis. Music can both differ across cultures and move people across cultures because it works on both levels. It enters cultural patterns while also acting on shared auditory and bodily structures.
Even so, stable and unstable notes are not absolute entities. Whether a note feels stable depends on its relation to the tonic. In C major, do, mi, and sol create a stable and bright feeling, while fa and ti often feel less stable. If a piece ends on fa, it may feel unfinished. But if the entire tonal centre shifts, the same physical pitch may become stable in another key. Stability and instability are not properties of isolated notes. They are positions within tonal relations.
This suggests that musical meaning does not arise from isolated notes. It arises from relationships. A note by itself has no final meaning. Its meaning is formed by its relation to the notes before and after it, the tonic, the rhythmic position, and the expectations already formed by the listener. Musical tension is generated within these relations.
This also explains why many pieces do not begin on the tonic or on a strong beat. Some pieces in four-four time may enter on the fourth beat of the first bar, with a note that is not itself stable. It is like entering a main road from the side rather than turning into it at a right angle from an intersection. Such a beginning does not feel abrupt. It feels as if the music is slowly appearing. It creates a sense of gradual entry.
This kind of weak-beat or unstable-note opening can also awaken memory. It does not feel like the announcement of something completely new. It feels as if it is slowly awakening an emotion that was already somewhere inside us. The listener begins to complete the direction internally, waiting for the music to enter the main line, waiting for it to resolve, and waiting for it to take us back to some familiar but indistinct place.
From here, the question of composition becomes even more interesting. How does a composer begin from nothing? Music theory often says that a piece can begin from a motif. A motif may be only a few notes, a rhythmic pattern, or a short musical fragment with inner vitality. It is like a seed from which melody, harmony, and structure can grow.
But the real question is where those first few notes come from. For the listener, the sound comes first and then strikes emotion. For the composer, the process may be reversed. A feeling may come first: a touch, a pressure, a bodily and mental impulse. Then that feeling begins to search for sound, and finally it becomes the first few notes. The listener moves from sound to emotion. The composer may move from emotion to sound.
This reminds me of how infants first learn to speak. When a baby first produces sounds like “mama” or “papa”, it is not because the baby has already mastered the rules of language. These sounds come easily from the body and gradually become connected with food, help, care, and response. The earliest sounds are not explained by language. They are triggered by bodily need, emotion, instinct, and environmental feedback.
Music may have a similar structure. It does not begin with a concept that is later translated into sound. It is more like a sound form pushed outward by emotion, desire, memory, bodily feeling, and auditory imagination. Later, of course, a composer uses technique: harmony, counterpoint, form, orchestration, and complex rational processing. But the first point is often not technique. It is feeling.
Human beings generally possess language ability, and they also possess some form of musical creativity. Not everyone becomes a composer, just as not everyone becomes a writer. But people hum, use rhythm to express emotion, and find themselves inside melodies. This suggests that musical ability is not reserved only for professionals. Professional training structures, expands, and refines a capacity that is already present.
The greatest difference between musical creation and verbal writing may lie here. Writing must pass through a system of meaning: concepts, judgement, and logic. Music also has rational structure, but its origin is closer to a non-semantic impulse of sound. It does not need to explain first. It sounds, and emotion happens.
Music, then, is not an accessory to language, nor is it merely decoration for emotion. It is a more original form of expression. It begins from sound, directly touches the body and emotion, and then forms more complex meaning within cultural experience. It has physiological foundations and cultural structures. It involves instinctive response and learned training. It can be extremely simple and extremely complex at the same time.
Perhaps this is why a few notes can suddenly stop us. The music has explained nothing, yet something has already been understood. It has stated no meaning, yet meaning has already been formed. This is the most mysterious power of music. Sound itself can become the form of emotion.
